Caring for your Brazilian Red Tarantula
Brazilian Red Tarantula
(Nhandu carapoensis)
Basic Information:
The Brazilian Red Tarantula is a medium-to-large New World species native to the grasslands and savannas of Brazil. It is admired for its striking reddish hues, dense leg setae, and robust body shape. Known for being bold and somewhat defensive compared to more docile species, it moves quickly but is generally hardy and adaptable in captivity. Adults commonly reach 5–6 inches in leg span and are primarily nocturnal, spending much of the day resting inside burrows or sheltering beneath objects.
Lifespan:
Females: 12-15 years
Males: 3–4 years
Sexing:
Best determined through molt inspection. Females have a visible spermatheca inside the exuviae. Males develop longer legs, bulbous pedipalps, and tibial hooks at maturity.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 5–10 gallon equivalent (8” x 8” x 8”).
Adults: 10–15 gallon equivalent (12” x 12” x 12”).
Use a horizontally oriented enclosure with limited climbing height to prevent falls.
Substrate:
Provide 4–6 inches of compactable substrate such as coconut fiber or a soil/peat blend. This species is semi-burrowing and benefits from deep, slightly moist substrate with a sturdy hide.
Lighting & Temperature:
Day Temp: 72-80°F
No special lighting required
Maintain ambient temperature with heat mats or room temperature
Avoid direct sunlight
Humidity:
Maintain 65–75% humidity, allowing the top layer of substrate to dry slightly while deeper layers remain lightly moist. Adequate ventilation is crucial to prevent mold.
Food:
This species is insectivorous, eating large gut-loaded feeders such as roaches, crickets, and the occasional superworm.
Juveniles: Feed 2–3 times weekly.
Adults: Feed every 7–10 days.
Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours, especially during molting periods.
Water:
Provide a shallow water dish with fresh water. No sponge is necessary—just keep it clean.
Bold, beautiful, and full of personality, the Brazilian Red Tarantula is a stunning display animal for those who enjoy New World species with striking coloration. Their hardy nature and active behavior make them rewarding for keepers ready for a slightly more assertive tarantula.
