Caring for your Society Finch

Society Finch

(Lonchura domestica)

Basic Information:

Society Finches—also called Bengal Finches—are small, gentle, and highly social birds domesticated through centuries of selective breeding. Unlike many finches, they do not exist in the wild and are known for their cooperative social behavior, often helping to incubate eggs and raise young. Adults typically reach 4–5 inches in length and are active throughout the day, constantly chattering, flying, and interacting with flock mates. Their calm nature and ability to thrive in groups make them one of the easiest finch species to keep.

Lifespan:

5–9 years in captivity with excellent care.

Sexing:

Society Finches are not sexually dimorphic. Males may sing more frequently, but DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex.

Enclosure:

  • Minimum Size: 30” x 18” x 18” cage with bar spacing no more than ½ inch.

Provide horizontal space for flight rather than height. Include multiple perches of varying widths and materials, swings, and natural branches. Avoid overcrowding, and if housing pairs, allow enough space to prevent territorial stress.

Bedding/ Liners:

Line the cage bottom with newspaper or paper towels and replace daily. Clean perches, dishes, and accessories weekly to maintain hygiene and prevent bacterial growth.

Lighting & Temperature:

Maintain a 12-hour light/dark cycle using natural sunlight or full-spectrum avian lighting. Full-spectrum (including UVB) helps enhance feather color, supports vitamin D synthesis, and improves overall health. Keep the room between 65–80°F, avoiding drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Humidity:

Offer frequent opportunities for bathing using shallow dishes or gentle misting. Proper moisture helps maintain skin and feather health.

Food:

Feed a base of high-quality finch seed mix or pellets, supplemented daily with fresh vegetables, leafy greens, sprouts, and occasional fruits. Provide cuttlebone or mineral blocks for calcium, and ensure fresh water is available at all times.

Socialization:

Society Finches are extremely social and happiest in small flocks.
• Keep at least two or more finches together.
• Provide enrichment such as millet sprays, foraging toys, and nest-like hides.

These finches are not typically hand-tamed like parrots but still bond well within their flock and enjoy gentle interaction from a distance.

Friendly, peaceful, and endlessly entertaining, Society Finches make excellent pets for those who enjoy observing natural flock behaviors. Their low-maintenance needs and charming personalities make them a wonderful choice for bird lovers of any experience level.
