Caring for your Zarayunga Dart Frog
Zarayunga Dart Frog
(Epipedobates anthonyi)
Basic Information:
The Zorayunga Dart Frog is a small, hardy dart frog species native to western Ecuador, particularly around the Zorayunga region of Ecuador. These frogs are typically reddish-orange to brown with lighter striping along the body, giving them a subtle but attractive appearance. Adults generally reach about 1–1.5 inches in length.
Unlike many dart frogs, Epipedobates anthonyi is known for being more tolerant of slightly lower humidity and less sensitive conditions, making it a great entry-level dart frog species. They are diurnal, active, and often visible throughout the day, frequently exploring their enclosure and interacting with their environment.
Lifespan:
8–12 years in captivity with proper care.
Sexing:
Sexing is possible with experience.
• Females are typically larger and more robust
• Males are smaller and may call, especially during breeding
Enclosure:
• Juveniles: 10-gallon enclosure
• Adults: 18” x 18” x 18” or larger for pairs or groups
Provide a planted, naturalistic enclosure with plenty of leaf litter, cork bark, and hiding areas. While they will use vertical space, they are more terrestrial than some other dart frog species.
Substrate:
A humidity-retaining substrate is ideal, such as:
• ABG mix
• Organic topsoil blends with leaf litter
• Moss layers
Bioactive setups are strongly recommended to maintain cleanliness and humidity.
Lighting & Temperature:
• Ambient Temperature: 72–78°F
• Cool Side: 70–72°F
• Basking Spot: Not required
• UVB Lighting: Not required but low-level UVB can be beneficial
• Provide a 10–12 hour light cycle
Avoid high temperatures, as dart frogs are sensitive to heat.
Humidity:
Maintain moderate to high humidity (70–90%).
This species can tolerate slightly drier conditions than many other dart frogs but should still have consistent moisture.
Food:
Zorayunga Dart Frogs are insectivorous.
• Primary diet: fruit flies (Drosophila spp.)
• Supplemental foods: springtails and other microfauna
Feed small amounts daily or every other day.
Supplementation:
Calcium without D3: Dust food 3–4 times weekly.
Calcium with D3: Use once a week if UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once monthly to support overall health.
Water:
Provide hydration through regular misting and small water features if desired. These frogs absorb moisture through their skin and do not require deep standing water.
Zorayunga Dart Frogs are an excellent beginner dart frog due to their hardiness, activity level, and adaptability. Their manageable care requirements and engaging behavior make them a great introduction to tropical amphibians.
