Caring for your Yellow Dragon Millipede

Yellow Dragon Millipede

(Desmoxytes spp.)

Basic Information:
The Yellow Dragon Millipede is a striking, brightly colored millipede native to Southeast Asia, particularly regions of Thailand. Known for their vivid yellow coloration and spiky, dragon-like body projections, these millipedes are a popular display invertebrate. Adults typically reach 2–3 inches in length.

They are primarily nocturnal and spend much of their time burrowed in substrate or exploring leaf litter in search of decaying organic material. Like many millipedes, they produce a defensive secretion when threatened, which can be mildly irritating to human skin. They are slow-moving, peaceful, and best suited as display animals with minimal handling.

Lifespan:
1–3 years in captivity with proper care.

Sexing:
Sexing is difficult and typically not necessary for general care.
• Males may have modified legs (gonopods) visible upon close inspection.
• Females are often slightly larger and more robust.

Enclosure:

• Juveniles: Small terrarium (5–10 gallons).
• Adults: 10-gallon enclosure or larger.

Provide a secure, well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of leaf litter, cork bark, and hiding spaces. These millipedes benefit from a naturalistic, bioactive-style setup.

Substrate:

A deep, nutrient-rich substrate is essential, such as:
• Organic topsoil
• Decaying hardwood leaf litter
• Rotten wood mixed into substrate

Substrate should be several inches deep to allow for burrowing and feeding.

Lighting & Temperature:

• Basking Spot: Not required
• Ambient Temperature: 72–78°F
• Cool Side: 70–72°F
• UVB Lighting: Not required. Provide a natural day/night cycle.

Avoid excessive heat and direct lighting, as they prefer low-light environments.

Humidity:

Maintain 70–90% humidity. The substrate should remain consistently moist (not waterlogged) to support proper hydration and molting.

Food:

Yellow Dragon Millipedes are detritivores.
• Primary diet consists of decaying leaves, rotting wood, and organic matter within the substrate.
• Supplemental foods can include small amounts of vegetables (such as cucumber, zucchini, or carrots).

A well-established substrate often provides the majority of their nutritional needs.

Water:

They obtain most of their moisture from the substrate and environment. Light misting is essential to maintain humidity, and a shallow water source is generally not required.

Yellow Dragon Millipedes are a fantastic choice for keepers looking for a low-maintenance, visually unique invertebrate. Their bright coloration and peaceful nature make them ideal for display, especially in bioactive or naturalistic enclosures.
