Tokay Gecko Care
Lifespan:
10-15 years in captivity.
Sexing:
Sexing can be determined around 6-12 months of age. Males have larger heads and more pronounced, pronounced femoral pores on their thighs compared to females.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 20-gallon tall terrarium (minimum dimensions: 24"x12"x18").
Adults: 30-gallon tall terrarium (minimum dimensions: 36"x18"x18").
Substrate:
A loose substrate mix that retains humidity is ideal. A combination of coconut fiber and orchid bark works well, mimicking their natural habitat.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: 90-95°F.
Ambient Temperature: 78-85°F.
Cool Side: 75-80°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended
Humidity:
Humidity levels should be maintained between 50-70%. Mist the enclosure daily to provide sufficient humidity and help with shedding.
Food:
Tokay Geckos are carnivorous. Their diet primarily consists of live insects, such as crickets, dubia roaches, and mealworms. They can also benefit from the occasional offering of small rodents.
Water:
Tokay Geckos typically drink water droplets from misted surfaces. Always provide a shallow water dish with fresh, clean water, though they may prefer to drink from misted leaves and enclosure surfaces.
Supplementation:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health.
With attentive husbandry and a thoughtfully arranged habitat, Tokay Geckos can thrive as captivating and resilient reptiles. Their vibrant colors and bold personalities make them a standout species, particularly for experienced keepers. Building trust through patience allows these geckos to reveal their fascinating natural behaviors, enhancing the joy of keeping them.
