Chahoua Gecko Care
Lifespan:
15-20 years in captivity.
Sexing:
Sexing can be determined around 9-12 months of age. Males have visible hemipenal bulges and pre-anal pores, while females lack these features.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 12"x12"x18" vertical enclosure.
Adults: 18"x18"x24" vertical terrarium.
Substrate:
A loose, humidity-retaining substrate mix of coconut fiber, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss works best. This mix mimics their natural tropical forest environment and helps maintain humidity.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: Not needed
Ambient Temperature: 78-80°F.
Cool Side: 70-75°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.
*Important: High temperatures (above 85°F) can cause significant stress and overheating.
Humidity:
Humidity levels should be kept between 60-80%, with misting twice daily. Ensure the gecko has access to a humid hide to help with shedding and maintain overall hydration.
Food:
Chahoua Geckos are omnivores. Their diet consists of a commercial powdered gecko diet mixed with water, supplemented with live insects like crickets or dubia roaches once or twice a week.
Water:
Chahoua Geckos will drink water droplets from misted surfaces. Always provide a shallow water dish with fresh, clean water, though they may prefer drinking from leaves and enclosure walls after misting..
Supplementation:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health.
With proper care, Chahoua Geckos make fascinating and hardy pets. Their gentle temperament, unique appearance, and adaptability to handling make them a favorite among gecko enthusiasts. Providing an enclosure that mimics their natural habitat ensures they thrive, rewarding keepers with their engaging behaviors and striking colors.
