Caring for your Indian Spice Finch
Indian Spice Finch
(Lonchura punctulata)
Basic Information:
The Indian Spice Finch, also known as the Nutmeg Mannikin, is a small, social finch native to South and Southeast Asia, including regions of India. These birds are easily recognized by their warm brown coloration, scaled chest pattern, and compact size, typically reaching about 4 inches in length.
They are peaceful, flock-oriented birds that thrive in groups and are constantly active—flying, foraging, and interacting with one another. Unlike parrots, Spice Finches are not typically hand-tamed but are excellent display birds with soft, pleasant vocalizations. They are diurnal and do best in calm environments with consistent routines.
Lifespan:
5–8 years in captivity with proper care.
Sexing:
Sexing can be difficult as males and females look very similar.
• Males may sing more frequently.
• Visual differences are minimal, and behavior is often the best indicator.
Enclosure:
Minimum: 24” x 18” x 18” cage for a small group
Recommended: Larger flight cage or aviary
Spice Finches should be kept in groups of at least 3–4 individuals. Provide horizontal space for flight, along with perches, plants (real or artificial), and hiding areas to reduce stress.
Bedding/ Liners:
Simple, easy-to-clean substrates are best, such as:
• Paper liners
• Cage tray liners
• Sand sheets (optional)
These allow for easy maintenance and monitoring of droppings.
Lighting & Temperature:
• Ambient Temperature: 68–78°F
• Avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes
• UVB Lighting: Not required but beneficial (full-spectrum lighting recommended)
Provide a consistent 10–12 hour light cycle.
Humidity:
Maintain moderate humidity (40–60%). Occasional misting or access to bathing water helps maintain feather condition.
Food:
Indian Spice Finches are primarily granivores.
• High-quality finch seed mix as the staple
• Supplemental foods such as millet sprays, fresh greens, and soft foods
• Occasional egg food for added protein
A varied diet helps support overall health and breeding condition.
Socialization:
Society Finches are extremely social and happiest in small flocks.
• Keep at least two or more finches together.
• Provide enrichment such as millet sprays, foraging toys, and nest-like hides.
These finches are not typically hand-tamed like parrots but still bond well within their flock and enjoy gentle interaction from a distance.
Indian Spice Finches are peaceful, low-maintenance birds that are ideal for display in aviaries or flight cages. Their social nature and constant activity make them enjoyable to watch, especially in group settings.
