Caring for your Mexican Black King Snake

Mexican Black Kingsnake

(Lampropeltis getula nigrita)

Basic Information:

The Mexican Black Kingsnake is a striking, jet-black colubrid native to northwestern Mexico, where it inhabits deserts, scrublands, rocky outcrops, and semi-arid grasslands. Known for their glossy, solid-black scales and calm demeanor, these snakes are popular among both beginners and experienced keepers. As opportunistic predators, they are active, curious, and excellent feeders. Adults typically reach 3–4 feet, making them a manageable and rewarding species to keep.

Lifespan:

Typically 15-20 years in captivity

Sexing:

Sexing is typically done by probing or popping by an experienced keeper or veterinarian. Females are generally heavier-bodied, while males have longer, thicker tails.

Enclosure:

  • Juveniles: 20-gallon long enclosure (30” x 12” x 12”).

  • Adults: 40-gallon breeder (36” x 18” x 18”) or larger.

Provide multiple hides, climbing branches, and secure locking lids, as kingsnakes are talented escape artists.

Substrate:

  • Aspen shavings, coconut husk, soil/sand mixes, or bioactive substrates all work well. Provide at least 2–3 inches of depth to allow natural burrowing behaviors.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Spot: 88-92°F.

  • Ambient Temperature: 78-82°F

  • Cool Side: 72-75°F.

  • UVB Lighting: No special UVB required, but a low-level UVB bulb (5.0) may provide additional benefits.

Avoid overheated enclosures and ensure a proper thermal gradient.

Humidity:

Maintain 40-60% humidity. Increase slightly during shedding with light misting or a humid hide.

Always monitor humidity levels with a digital hygrometer.

Food:

Feed frozen thawed rodents of the appropriate size (About the same width as the widest part of the snake)

  • Juveniles: Feed every 5-7 days

  • Adults: Feed every 10-14 days

Water:

Provide fresh water daily in a shallow dish. Use a heavy dish to avoid tipping, and replace water daily or when dirty.

Supplementation:

  • No additional vitamins and minerals are needed when feeding whole prey items.
