Neon Day Gecko Care
Neon Day Gecko
(Phelsuma klemmeri)
The Neon Day Gecko is native to the islands of Madagascar and the surrounding region. Known for their vibrant green coloration with striking blue spots, these small geckos are arboreal and diurnal, actively foraging during the day. Adults typically reach lengths of 4-6 inches. They are known for their curious and energetic behavior, making them popular in the pet trade.
Lifespan:
5-10 years in captivity.
Sexing:
Sexing can typically be done around 6-12 months of age. Males are usually larger, more vibrantly colored, and have larger, more pronounced femoral pores compared to females.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 10-gallon vertical enclosure (12"x12"x18").
Adults: 20-gallon vertical enclosure (18"x18"x24" minimum).
Substrate:
A loose substrate mix that retains humidity is ideal, such as a combination of coconut fiber and sphagnum moss. This helps to maintain moisture levels and creates an environment similar to their natural habitat.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: 80-85°F.
Ambient Temperature: 75-80°F.
Cool Side: 70-75°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.
Humidity:
Humidity levels should be maintained between 60-80%. Misting the enclosure daily helps keep humidity levels up and assists with shedding.
Food:
Neon Day Geckos are omnivorous. Their diet consists primarily of a commercial powdered gecko diet mixed with water, along with live insects like fruit flies and small crickets. Fruits, such as mashed bananas or other soft fruits, can also be offered occasionally.
Water:
Neon Day Geckos typically drink from misted surfaces. Always provide a shallow water dish with fresh, clean water, though they may prefer to drink from leaves and enclosure surfaces.
Supplementation:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health.
With the right environment and attentive care, Neon Day Geckos can thrive as captivating and vibrant additions to a reptile collection. Their lively nature and striking colors make them a delight to observe in a well-maintained habitat. These geckos can flourish and bring a unique charm to any setup with proper husbandry and dedication.
