Bauer’s Chameleon Gecko Care
Bauer’s Chameleon Gecko
(Eurydactylodes agricolae)
Bauer’s Chameleon Geckos are native to New Caledonia, where they inhabit dense, humid forests. These geckos are arboreal and crepuscular, being most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Known for their unique prehensile tails and ability to change their color slightly to blend in with their environment, they are a fascinating species to keep. Adults typically reach 5-6 inches in length, making them a relatively small gecko species.
Lifespan:
10-15 years in captivity.
Sexing:
Sexing can typically be done at around 8-12 months of age. Males tend to have more pronounced hemipenal bulges at the base of their tail and visible pre-anal pores.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 12"x12"x18" vertical enclosure.
Adults: 18"x18"x24" vertical enclosure.
Substrate:
A loose, humidity-retaining substrate mix such as coconut fiber, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss is ideal. This mix closely resembles their natural forest floor and helps maintain moisture. Paper towels can be used as an alternative but should be replaced regularly when soiled.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: Not needed
Ambient Temperature: 72-78°F.
Cool Side: 70-75°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.
*Important: High temperatures (above 85°F) can cause significant stress and overheating.
Humidity:
Maintain humidity levels between 60-80%. Misting the enclosure twice daily will help keep the environment humid and aid in shedding.
Food:
Bauer’s Chameleon Geckos are omnivores. Their diet consists of a commercial powdered gecko diet supplemented with live insects like small crickets, fruit flies, and occasionally other small invertebrates. Fruit purées, such as mashed banana, can also be offered as an occasional treat.
Water:
These geckos primarily drink water droplets from misted surfaces. Always provide a shallow water dish with fresh water, though they may prefer to drink from leaves and enclosure walls after misting.
Supplementation:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health.
When provided with a suitable habitat and attentive care, Bauer’s Chameleon Geckos can thrive as fascinating and rewarding pets. Their gentle demeanor and unique appearance make them an excellent addition to any reptile enthusiast's collection. A commitment to proper husbandry ensures their well-being and allows them to display their charming behaviors fully.
