Caring for your Jungle Carpet Python

Morelia spilota cheynei

Basic Information:
The Jungle Carpet Python is a striking, semi-arboreal constrictor native to the subtropical and tropical rainforests of the Atherton Tableland region in northeastern Queensland, Australia. Renowned for their dramatic high-contrast appearance, they exhibit vivid patterns of deep velvety black against brilliant canary-yellow or gold bands and blotches. Adults maintain a slender, muscular, and athletic build, typically reaching 5 to 7 feet in length, with mature females generally growing slightly longer and heavier than males.

These snakes are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, spending daylight hours coiled securely among elevated tree limbs, rock crevices, or hollows before emerging at dusk to hunt birds, small marsupials, and rodents. While hatchlings and juveniles can be notoriously defensive and "nippy," consistent gentle handling and regular hook/tap-training allow them to mature into calm, confident, and manageable display pets.

Lifespan:

20–25+ years in captivity with proper care.

Sexing:

Sexing is most accurately determined through cloacal probing or popping conducted by an experienced keeper or veterinarian. Females generally grow larger and heavier-bodied, while males tend to stay slightly smaller with proportionally longer tails.

Enclosure:

Because Jungle Carpet Pythons are active, avid climbers, vertical usable space is just as critical as floor dimensions.

  • Juveniles: Start young snakes in a 10- to 20-gallon terrarium or a secure 15–28 quart tub with multiple snug hides.

  • Adults: Minimum enclosure size of 4' x 2' x 2' (48" x 24" x 24"), with a 4' x 2' x 3' or 4' x 2' x 4' front-opening terrarium strongly recommended.

Provide a multi-tiered network of sturdy climbing branches, elevated shelves, and cork bark tubes. Include at least two secure ground hides (warm end and cool end) and lockable doors to prevent escapes.

Substrate:

Use moisture-retentive substrates that resist mold and support humidity, such as coconut husk chunks (coco coir/chips), cypress mulch, or orchid bark. Unprinted butcher paper or paper towels work well for quarantine and hatchlings. Never use cedar or pine shavings, as they release aromatic hydrocarbons (phenols) that are toxic to reptiles, causing severe respiratory tract irritation, neurological toxicity, and long-term liver damage..

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking spot: 88°F–92°F

  • Cool side: 74°F–78°F.

  • Ambient Temperature: 80°F–84°F throughout the enclosure.

  • UVB lighting requirements: ZooMed 5.0 or 5%–6% T5 HO UVB lighting is strongly recommended for circadian health.

  • Lighting schedule: 12-hour light and 12-hour dark cycle.

Humidity:

Maintain 50%–65% ambient humidity, with temporary increases up to 75%–80% during shedding.

Food:

Strictly carnivorous. Feed thawed, warmed frozen prey using long feeding tongs.

  • Hatchlings: Mouse fuzzies or day-old rat pinkies every 5–7 days.

  • Juveniles & Subadults: Fuzzy/weaned rats or small adult mice every 7–10 days.

  • Adults: Small to medium rats (45g–150g) every 14–21 days.

Water:

Provide a heavy, tip-proof ceramic or plastic bowl filled with fresh, dechlorinated water on the cool end. Ensure the bowl is large enough for the snake to fully coil inside for soaking.

Jungle Carpet Pythons are among the most visually striking snakes in the reptile hobby. Their bold yellow-and-black contrast, alert intelligence, and arboreal habits make them exceptional display animals that mature into rewarding pets for intermediate keepers.
