Green Anole
Green Anole
(Anolis carolinensis)
The Green Anole, also known as the American Chameleon, is native to the southeastern United States. Known for its ability to change color from green to brown, this small, active lizard typically grows 5-8 inches long. They are arboreal and thrive in warm, humid environments with plenty of foliage.
Lifespan:
In captivity, Green Anoles can live 5-7 years with proper care.
Sexing:
Males tend to be larger and display a pinkish dewlap (throat fan), especially during mating displays. Females are generally smaller and lack the pronounced dewlap.
Enclosure:
A vertical 10-gallon terrarium is suitable for a single anole. Provide branches, vines, and plants (live or artificial) for climbing and hiding. A screened enclosure is ideal for airflow.
Substrate:
Coconut fiber or reptile-safe soil helps retain humidity and supports their natural behaviors. Replace or clean regularly to prevent mold and bacteria.
Lighting & Temperature:
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: 85-90°F
Ambient Temperature: 78-85F.
Cool Side: 70-75°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.
Humidity:
Green Anoles require humidity levels between 60-70%. Mist the enclosure daily to help maintain these levels and provide drinking sources from water droplets.
Food:
Green Anoles are insectivores, consuming small crickets, mealworms, and flies. Dust with calcium and multivitamin supplements 2-3 times weekly.
Water:
Offer a shallow water dish and mist daily. Green Anoles often prefer drinking droplets from leaves.
Supplementation:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health
