Brown Anole
Brown Anole
(Anolis sagrei)
The Brown Anole is native to the Caribbean and parts of Central America and has adapted well to various habitats. It is a small, active lizard, usually 5-8 inches in length, known for its earthy brown color and distinct patterns, with males displaying vibrant dewlaps (throat fans) for communication.
Lifespan:
Brown Anoles generally live 3-5 years in captivity with proper care.
Sexing:
Males are larger, with brighter dewlaps and more prominent crests along their backs. Females are smaller and have lighter coloration.
Enclosure:
For a single anole, a 10-gallon vertical terrarium is suitable. Provide plenty of branches, rocks, and live or artificial plants for climbing and hiding. Screened enclosures are ideal to maintain good airflow.
Substrate:
Coconut fiber or reptile-safe soil helps retain humidity and supports burrowing behavior. Replace or clean regularly to prevent mold and bacterial growth.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: 85-90°F
Ambient Temperature: 78-85F.
Cool Side: 70-75°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.
Humidity:
Maintain humidity levels around 60-70%. Mist the enclosure daily to maintain hydration and encourage natural drinking behavior from droplets.
Food:
Brown Anoles are insectivores, feeding on crickets, small mealworms, and flightless fruit flies. Dust with calcium and multivitamin supplements 2-3 times weekly to support growth and health.
Water:
Provide a shallow water dish and mist the enclosure daily. Anoles may prefer drinking from misted surfaces rather than still water.
Supplementation:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health
