Caring for your Florida Bark Scorpion

Centruroides gracilis

Basic Information:
The Florida Bark Scorpion is a slender, arboreal scorpion species native to the southeastern United States, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean, including regions of Florida. This species is typically light brown to tan with darker patterning and can reach about 3–4 inches in length.

They are nocturnal and highly active climbers, often found on bark, walls, and vertical surfaces. Unlike many terrestrial scorpions, bark scorpions prefer height and will spend much of their time off the ground. While their venom is not considered dangerous to healthy adults, it can be painful, and handling is not recommended. They are best kept as display animals.

Lifespan:

3–6 years in captivity with proper care.

Sexing:

Sexing can be determined with experience.
• Males are typically more slender with longer tails
• Females are often slightly larger and more robust

Enclosure:

• Juveniles: Small enclosure or critter keeper
• Adults: 5–10 gallon enclosure or larger

Provide a vertically oriented enclosure with plenty of climbing surfaces such as cork bark, branches, and textured décor. Ensure the enclosure is escape-proof with a secure lid..

Substrate:

A slightly moisture-retaining substrate is ideal, such as:
• Coconut fiber
• Organic topsoil
• Soil-based mixes

Substrate depth is less important than providing vertical climbing structures.

Lighting & Temperature:

• Basking Spot: Not required
• Ambient Temperature: 72–82°F
• Cool Side: 70–72°F
• UVB Lighting: Not required. Provide a natural day/night cycle

Stable, moderate temperatures are ideal.

Humidity:

Maintain moderate humidity (60–75%).
Light misting helps maintain hydration but avoid overly wet conditions.

Food:

Florida Bark Scorpions are carnivorous.
• Feed appropriately sized insects such as crickets, roaches, and small worms
• Juveniles should be fed more frequently
• Adults typically eat once or twice per week

Water:

Provide hydration through light misting.
A very small water dish can be included but is often not necessary.

Florida Bark Scorpions are active, arboreal, and fascinating to observe, especially in vertically designed enclosures. Their climbing behavior and nocturnal activity make them an excellent display species for invertebrate enthusiasts.
