Caring for your Darth Maul Tarantula

Tliltocatl seladonia

Basic Information:
The Darth Maul Tarantula is a rare and highly sought-after arboreal tarantula species native to Brazil, particularly regions of Brazil. This species is known for its striking black and white patterning that resembles the face markings of Darth Maul, along with bright orange accents on the abdomen. Adults are very small, typically reaching only about 1–1.5 inches in leg span.

Unlike most tarantulas, this species creates a trapdoor-style web retreat on bark surfaces, making it one of the most unique tarantulas in the hobby. They are reclusive, delicate, and best suited as display animals rather than for handling.

Lifespan:

• Females: 10–15 years
• Males: 3–4 years

Sexing:

Sexing is typically determined by experienced keepers.
• Males are slimmer and mature faster
• Females are larger-bodied and longer-lived

Enclosure:

• Slings/Juveniles: Small arboreal enclosure or vial setup
• Adults: Small arboreal enclosure (4” x 4” x 6” or similar)

Provide a vertical enclosure with cork bark or flat surfaces for webbing. This species will construct a trapdoor-style retreat, often staying hidden inside for long periods.

Substrate:

A simple, slightly moisture-retaining substrate works well, such as:
• Coconut fiber
• Organic topsoil
• Soil-based mixes

Substrate depth is less important than providing vertical structure and anchor points.

Lighting & Temperature:

• Basking Spot: Not required
• Ambient Temperature: 70–75°F
• Cool Side: 68–70°F
• UVB Lighting: Not required. Provide a natural day/night cycle

Avoid excessive heat, as this species prefers stable, moderate temperatures.

Humidity:

Maintain moderate humidity (60–75%).
Light misting is sufficient, but avoid overly wet conditions, as poor ventilation can lead to issues.

Food:

Darth Maul Tarantulas are carnivorous.
• Feed small insects such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets, or small roaches
• Juveniles should be fed more frequently
• Adults typically eat once every 1–2 weeks

Due to their reclusive nature, they may not always be seen feeding.

Water:

Provide hydration through light misting.
A very small water dish can be included but is often not necessary.

Darth Maul Tarantulas are one of the most unique tarantulas in the hobby due to their trapdoor webbing behavior and striking coloration. While they are not interactive, they are an incredible display species for collectors and experienced keepers.
