Caring for your Clown Tree Frog

Dendropsophus leucophyllatus

Basic Information:
The Clown Tree Frog is a small, brightly patterned arboreal frog native to tropical regions of South America, particularly in areas of Brazil and surrounding Amazon Basin countries. This species is known for its bold coloration, typically featuring a mix of cream, yellow, orange, and black patterning that gives it a “clown-like” appearance. Adults usually reach about 1–1.5 inches in length.

They are nocturnal and arboreal, spending much of their time perched on branches or leaves. Clown Tree Frogs are active at night and may vocalize, especially males during breeding periods. They are best suited as display animals due to their small size and delicate nature.

Lifespan:

5–10 years in captivity with proper care.

Sexing:

Sexing can be determined with experience.
• Males are typically smaller and may call
• Females are larger and more robust

Enclosure:

• Juveniles: 10-gallon vertical enclosure
• Adults: 18” x 18” x 24” or larger

Provide a vertically oriented, planted enclosure with plenty of branches, vines, and foliage. Live plants are highly recommended to maintain humidity and provide cover.

Substrate:

A high-humidity substrate is ideal, such as:
• ABG mix
• Coconut fiber
• Moss and leaf litter

Bioactive setups work especially well for this species.

Lighting & Temperature:

• Ambient Temperature: 72–78°F
• Cool Side: 70–72°F
• Basking Spot: Not required
• UVB Lighting: Not required but low-level UVB can be beneficial
• Provide a 10–12 hour light cycle

Avoid high temperatures, as they are sensitive to overheating.

Humidity:

Maintain high humidity (70–90%).
Regular misting or an automated system is recommended.

Food:

• Feed small insects such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets, and small roaches
• Juveniles should be fed daily
• Adults typically eat every other day

Supplementation Schedule:

Calcium without D3: Dust feeders 3–4 times weekly.
Calcium with D3: Use once weekly if UVB is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once monthly.

Water:

Provide hydration through regular misting.
They will drink droplets from leaves and enclosure surfaces rather than from standing water.

Clown Tree Frogs are visually striking and active, making them an excellent addition to tropical display enclosures. Their bold patterns and nocturnal activity provide plenty of interest for keepers.
