Chinese Cave Gecko Care

Chinese Cave Gecko

(Goniurosaurus hainanensis)

The Chinese Cave Gecko is native to the subtropical forests of southern China, specifically Hainan Island. These geckos are primarily terrestrial and nocturnal, often hiding during the day and becoming active at night. Their striking appearance features dark black or purple coloration with contrasting orange or yellow bands, along with bright red eyes. Adults typically grow to 8-9 inches in length. They are shy but hardy lizards, making them a popular species in herpetoculture.

Lifespan:

10-15 years in captivity.

Sexing:

Sexing can be done around 8-12 months of age. Males typically have a broader head and more pronounced pre-anal pores compared to females.

Enclosure:

  • Juveniles: 20-gallon horizontal enclosure (24"x12"x12").

  • Adults: 30-gallon horizontal enclosure (36"x18"x18").

Substrate:

A loose, moisture-retaining substrate mix is ideal, such as a combination of coconut fiber and sphagnum moss. This setup mimics their natural forest floor and helps maintain humidity. Avoid reptile carpets due to the risk of injury.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Area: Not Needed

  • Ambient Temperature: 75-78°F.

  • Cool Side: 68-72°F.

  • UVB Lighting: Not Needed

*Important: High temperatures (above 80°F) can cause significant stress and overheating

Humidity:

Maintain humidity between 60-80%, misting the enclosure daily to keep levels stable. A shallow water dish and a moist hide filled with sphagnum moss will assist in creating a humid microclimate.

Food:

Chinese Cave Geckos are insectivorous. Feed them appropriately sized live insects, such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms.

Water:

Provide a shallow water dish with clean, fresh water at all times. These geckos may drink from the dish or from water droplets after misting.

Supplementation:

  • Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.

  • Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.

  • Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health.

By providing a stable and suitable habitat, the Chinese Cave Gecko can thrive in captivity and make an interesting and low-maintenance addition to your reptile collection. These nocturnal creatures are relatively hardy, and with attention to their care needs, they can live a long and healthy life. Their calm demeanor and beautiful coloration make them an excellent choice for reptile enthusiasts looking for a unique pet.
