Madagascar Giant Day Gecko Care
Lifespan:
15-20 years in captivity.
Sexing:
Sexing can usually be done once the gecko reaches sexual maturity, around 12-18 months. Males will display prominent femoral pores and hemipenal bulges at the base of the tail, while females lack these characteristics.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 18"x18"x24" vertical terrarium.
Adults: 24"x24"x36" or larger vertical enclosure.
Substrate:
A loose substrate mix that retains moisture is ideal, such as a combination of coconut fiber and orchid bark. This substrate holds humidity well while mimicking their tropical forest environment.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: 90-95°F.
Ambient Temperature: 78-85°F.
Cool Side: 75-80°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.
Humidity:
Madagascar Giant Day Geckos require moderate to high humidity levels, between 60-80%. Mist the enclosure twice daily to maintain proper humidity, and ensure there are areas with both higher and lower humidity levels to allow the gecko to choose.
Food:
These geckos are omnivores. They primarily feed on a commercial powdered gecko diet mixed with water, supplemented with live insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, and fruit puree. Insects should be gut-loaded and dusted with calcium and vitamins before being offered.
Water:
Madagascar Giant Day Geckos will drink water droplets from misted surfaces. Provide a clean water dish, although they may prefer to drink from leaves and other surfaces after misting.
Supplementation:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health.
With proper care, Madagascar Giant Day Geckos can be vibrant and captivating pets. Their striking coloration and active daytime behavior make them a joy to observe in a well-maintained enclosure. These geckos thrive in environments that mimic their natural tropical habitat, rewarding keepers with their fascinating and engaging personalities.
