The Carpet Chameleon, native to Madagascar, is a vibrant species known for its unique patterning and adaptability. Averaging 7-9 inches in length, this species is highly territorial and displays a range of colors depending on mood and environment. Its small size and lively behavior make it a popular choice for intermediate reptile keepers.

Lifespan:

Typically lives 3-5 years in captivity.

Sexing:

Females are generally larger with more rounded bodies, while males have slimmer physiques. Males may have more vibrant coloration.

Enclosure:

Adults require a minimum of a 18x18x36-inch vertical enclosure to accommodate climbing needs. Include live or artificial plants and branches to replicate a forested environment.

Substrate:

Coconut fiber or organic topsoil with leaf litter to maintain humidity and support plants. Spot-clean regularly.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Area: 85-90°F

  • Ambient Temperature: 78-85F.

  • Cool Side: 70-75°F.

  • UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.

Humidity:

Maintain at 60-80%. Mist the enclosure 1-2 times daily for hydration and humidity.

Food:

Insectivorous diet including crickets, roaches, and worms. Dust insects with calcium powder 2-3 times weekly.

Water:

Offer water through daily misting; they often drink droplets from plants.

Supplementation:

  • Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.

  • Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.

  • Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health
