Basic Information:
The Burmese Python is one of the largest snake species on Earth, native to the tropical rainforests, grasslands, marshes, and river valleys of Southeast Asia. Sexing:
Sex can be accurately determined through cloacal probing by an experienced keeper or reptile veterinarian. In mature adults, males generally possess noticeably longer, thicker cloacal spurs on either side of the vent and longer tails relative to their body size compared to females.
Enclosure:
Hatchlings & Juveniles: A 40-gallon breeder terrarium or a secure 3x2-foot PVC enclosure to help them feel secure and maintain high humidity.
Adults: Minimum enclosure size of 8x4x4 feet for average-sized adults, while exceptionally large females (14+ feet) often require custom 10x4-foot or 12x6-foot rooms or walk-in enclosures. Enclosures must be constructed from heavy-duty, moisture-resistant materials (such as solid PVC or sealed wood) with robust, escape-proof locking mechanisms and reinforced glass or acrylic sliding doors.
Substrate:
Moisture-retentive, absorbent substrates such as cypress mulch, coconut husk chips (coco coir/chunks), or specialized reptile bark. Paper towels or unprinted newspaper work well for quarantine and young juveniles. Avoid cedar and pine shavings, as their aromatic oils are toxic to snakes.
Lighting & Temperature:

Humidity:
60%–75%. Burmese Pythons require moderate-to-high humidity to ensure clean, one-piece sheds and support respiratory health. Maintain humidity using moisture-retaining substrates, enclosed PVC cages, and occasional misting.
Food:
Strictly Carnivorous. Feed appropriately sized, pre-killed or thawed frozen prey:
Hatchlings & Juveniles: Appropriately sized mice to small/medium rats fed once every 7–10 days.
Subadults: Large rats to small rabbits fed once every 10–14 days.
Adults: Large rabbits, guinea pigs, or jumbo poultry (chickens/quail) fed once every 2–4 weeks depending on weight and body condition. Always use feeding tongs and practice safe tap-training/hook routines with giant constrictors.
Water:
Provide a heavy, sturdy, non-tippable water basin large enough for the snake to drink from and fully submerge its body to soak. Because large pythons frequently defecate or soak in their water bowls, water must be checked daily, disinfected, and refilled immediately when soiled.
