Caring for your Black Death Feigning Beetles

Black Feigning Death Beetle

(Asbolus verrucosus)

Basic Information:

Smooth Black Feigning Death Beetles, also known as Blue Death Feigning Beetles (before their waxy coating fades), are hardy desert beetles native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. They are best known for their unique defense behavior—when threatened, they roll onto their backs and “play dead” to deter predators. Adults typically measure 1–1.25 inches in length and can live for an impressive 8+ years in captivity, making them one of the longest-lived beetles kept as pets.

Lifespan:
8–10 years with proper care

Sexing:

There are no easy visual differences between males and females; sexing is not typically practical without close observation of breeding behavior.

Enclosure:

  • A 10 gallon terrarium with secure ventilation is perfect for a small group.

  • Provide several hides, rocks, and cork bark to create a naturalistic environment.

  • Use a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape.

Substrate:
A mix of sand, coconut fiber, and soil (kept mostly dry) allows for burrowing.

Depth of 2–3 inches recommended.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Spot: Not required

  • Ambient Temperature: 75–85°F

  • Cool Side: Room temperature (low 70s is fine)

  • Lighting: Not required, but a natural day/night light cycle helps regulate activity.

Humidity:

Keep humidity low (10–20%) to mimic their desert habitat. Excess moisture can harm them. Ensure good ventilation.

Food:

  • Omnivorous scavengers. Provide a mix of:

    • Dried foods like fish flakes, turtle pellets, or dry dog food.

    • Fresh vegetables such as carrots, sweet potato, or leafy greens (remove uneaten fresh food within 24 hours to prevent mold).

Water:

Offer gel water crystals or lightly mist a corner of the enclosure once a week.

Never use an open water dish—risk of drowning is high.
