Argentine Black & White Tegu Care

Lifespan:

In captivity, they can live up to 10-15 years with proper care.

Sexing:

Males are typically larger and have more robust heads compared to females. During breeding season, males may also display more intense coloration.

Enclosure:

Juveniles: A 40-gallon terrarium (36” x 18” x 18”) with plenty of hiding spots and climbing opportunities.

Adults: A 6-8 foot long enclosure with a variety of substrates, large hiding spaces, and room to roam.

Substrate:

A mixture of coconut fiber, cypress mulch, and soil is ideal for creating a naturalistic environment that retains moisture and supports burrowing.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Spot: 100-110°F.

  • Cool Side: 80-85°F.

  • Nighttime Temperature: 75-80°F.

  • UVB Lighting: A strong UVB bulb (Exo Terra UVB300 or ZooMed 10.0) is essential for calcium metabolism and overall health.

Humidity:

Maintain humidity levels between 50-60% to mimic their tropical environment. Mist the enclosure regularly and provide a water dish for hydration.

Food:

Black & White Tegus are omnivores, requiring a varied diet that includes fruits, vegetables, insects, and small animals like rodents.

Water:

Provide fresh water daily in a shallow dish. Tegus will often soak in their water dish, so make sure it is large enough to allow them to enter fully.

Supplementation:

  • Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.

  • Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.

  • Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health

With proper care, the Black & White Tegu can become a highly rewarding and interactive pet. Their intelligence and docile nature, combined with their impressive size, make them a fascinating companion for reptile enthusiasts. However, they require ample space, a varied diet, and regular handling to thrive in captivity.
