Caring for your Amazon Tree Boa
Amazon Tree Boa
Corallus hortulanus
Basic Information:
The Amazon Tree Boa is a highly variable, arboreal snake native to the tropical rainforests of South America, including regions of Brazil and surrounding Amazon Basin countries. This species is known for its incredible range of color morphs, from earthy browns and grays to vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. Adults typically reach 4–6 feet in length.
They are nocturnal and strictly arboreal, spending most of their time coiled on branches in a classic “saddle perch.” Amazon Tree Boas are known for being more defensive than many other boas and are not typically suited for frequent handling. They are best kept as display animals for intermediate to advanced keepers.
Lifespan:
15–20 years in captivity with proper care.
Sexing:
Sexing is most accurately determined through probing by an experienced keeper or veterinarian.
• Females are typically larger and heavier-bodied
• Males are smaller with proportionally longer tails
Enclosure:
• Juveniles: 20-gallon tall enclosure
• Adults: 36” x 18” x 36” enclosure or larger
Provide a vertically oriented enclosure with multiple sturdy perches at different heights. Include foliage and hides to create a secure, naturalistic environment.
Substrate:
A humidity-retaining substrate is ideal, such as:
• Coconut fiber
• Cypress mulch
• Organic topsoil mixes
These substrates help maintain proper humidity levels.
Lighting & Temperature:
• Basking Spot: 88–90°F
• Ambient Temperature: 78–82°F
• Cool Side: 75–78°F
• UVB Lighting: Not required but low-level UVB can be beneficial
• Provide a 10–12 hour light cycle
Maintain proper heat gradients using thermostat-controlled heating.
Humidity:
Maintain high humidity (70–80%).
Regular misting is important, but ensure adequate ventilation to prevent stagnant air.
Food:
Amazon Tree Boas are carnivorous ambush predators.
• Juveniles typically eat appropriately sized mice
• Adults usually eat rats every 10–14 days depending on size
Feed based on body condition and avoid overfeeding.
Water:
Provide a sturdy water bowl with fresh water at all times. They may drink regularly and occasionally soak.
Amazon Tree Boas are a visually stunning species with incredible color variation and classic arboreal behavior. While not ideal for handling, they make an excellent display animal for experienced keepers.
