Caring for your Wooly Darkling Beetle

Wooly Darkling Beetle

Eleodes spp.

Basic Information:
The Wooly Darkling Beetle is a hardy, desert-dwelling beetle native to arid regions of the southwestern United States, including areas of Arizona. These beetles are often recognized by their matte black appearance and slightly textured (“wooly”) look. Adults typically reach about 1–1.5 inches in length.

They are primarily nocturnal and spend much of their time burrowing or hiding during the day, becoming more active at night to forage. When threatened, they exhibit a classic defensive posture by raising their abdomen and may release a mild odor as a deterrent. Wooly Darkling Beetles are calm, slow-moving, and well-suited as display invertebrates.

Lifespan:

1–2 years in captivity with proper care.

Sexing:

Sexing is difficult and not typically necessary for general care.
• Males may have slightly more curved abdomens.
• Females are often slightly larger and more rounded.

Enclosure:

• Juveniles: Small terrarium or enclosure (5 gallons or similar).
• Adults: 5–10 gallon enclosure or larger.

Provide a secure, well-ventilated enclosure with a tight-fitting lid. Include hides such as cork bark and rocks, along with open space for foraging.

Substrate:

A dry, desert-style substrate is ideal, such as:
• Sand/topsoil mix
• Play sand
• Arid bioactive substrate

Substrate should allow for shallow burrowing while remaining mostly dry.

Lighting & Temperature:

• Basking Spot: Not required
• Ambient Temperature: 70–80°F
• Cool Side: 68–72°F
• UVB Lighting: Not required. Provide a natural day/night cycle.

Avoid excessive humidity and high heat.

Humidity:

Maintain low humidity (20–40%). These beetles are adapted to dry environments and do not tolerate excessive moisture.

Food:

Wooly Darkling Beetles are detritivores and scavengers.
• Feed a mix of dry plant matter and organic material
• Supplemental foods can include vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and leafy greens

Remove uneaten fresh food before it spoils.

Water:

They obtain moisture from their food and environment. A water dish is not required; provide moisture through fresh vegetables.

Wooly Darkling Beetles are low-maintenance, hardy invertebrates that are ideal for desert-themed enclosures. Their unique defensive behavior and ease of care make them a great choice for beginners and experienced keepers alike.
