Veiled Chameleon

Veiled Chameleon

(Chamaeleo calyptratus)

Native to Yemen and Saudi Arabia, the Veiled Chameleon thrives in hot, arid climates with access to lush vegetation. They are known for their impressive casque (the tall crest on their heads) and vibrant green coloration, often displaying yellow, blue, and orange markings. Adults can reach up to 24 inches for males and around 12-14 inches for females.

Lifespan:

With attentive care, they can live 5-7 years, though females may have shorter lifespans due to the energy demands of egg-laying.

Sexing:

Males have a larger casque and are generally larger in size. They also have a tarsal spur on each hind leg.

Enclosure:

Size: Adults require a minimum 24"x24"x48" enclosure.

Setup: Include branches, vines, and non-toxic plants to create a natural climbing environment with good airflow.

Substrate:

Organic soil or coconut fiber is ideal to help retain humidity.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Area: 85-90°F

  • Ambient Temperature: 78-85F.

  • Cool Side: 70-75°F.

  • UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.

Humidity:

Aim for 50-70% humidity with regular misting. A dripper system or automatic mister ensures hydration and optimal humidity levels.

Food:

Veiled Chameleons are primarily insectivores, enjoying crickets, roaches, and occasional waxworms or mealworms. Adults can also be offered small amounts of greens like collard and dandelion leaves a few times a week.

Water:

Use a dripper or misting to provide fresh water droplets, as chameleons drink from leaf surfaces rather than water dishes.

Supplementation:

  • Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.

  • Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.

  • Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health

With consistent care, including UVB exposure, proper humidity, and hydration, Veiled Chameleons can thrive in captivity and display their full range of colors and behaviors.
