Senegal Chameleon
Senegal Chameleon
(Chamaeleo senegalensis)
The Senegal Chameleon originates from West Africa, inhabiting areas of dense vegetation and open savannas. These chameleons are typically green or brown with the ability to shift colors based on mood and environment. Reaching up to 8 inches in length, they are relatively small compared to other chameleon species and are known for their calm disposition.
Lifespan:
With proper care, they live 3-5 years in captivity, sometimes longer under optimal conditions.
Sexing:
Males have a longer, thicker tail base, while females may display a smaller build and slimmer tail.
Enclosure:
Size: Minimum 18"x18"x36" vertical enclosure for adults.
Furnishings: Plenty of branches and non-toxic live plants like ficus or pothos to mimic natural foliage.
Substrate:
Organic soil or coconut fiber works well, helping maintain humidity while providing a soft base.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Area: 85-90°F
Ambient Temperature: 78-85F.
Cool Side: 70-75°F.
UVB Lighting: A 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended.
Humidity:
Senegal Chameleons require a humidity range of 60-80%. Regular misting and occasional use of a dripper or fogger aid hydration and maintain moisture levels.
Food:
These insectivores primarily consume crickets, roaches, and small worms. Juveniles should be fed daily; adults every other day. Dust insects with calcium and multivitamins regularly.
Water:
Misting the enclosure regularly and using a dripper provides drinking water, as chameleons drink droplets from leaves.
Supplementation:
Calcium with D3: Dust food 2-3 times weekly.
Calcium without D3: Use on alternating days if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins: Offer once weekly to support overall health
Senegal Chameleons are sensitive to their environment and require consistent care to thrive. They make fascinating pets with proper husbandry and regular enrichment.
