Caring for your Mexican Black Kingsnake

Mexican Black Kingsnake

Lampropeltis getula nigrita

Basic Information:
The Mexican Black Kingsnake is a striking subspecies of kingsnake native to northwestern Mexico, particularly regions of Mexico. As juveniles, they may show faint patterning, but adults develop a deep, glossy black coloration that gives them their name. Adults typically reach 3–4 feet in length and have a slender but muscular build.

They are primarily diurnal to crepuscular and are active, curious hunters that readily explore their environment. Like other kingsnakes, they are known for their strong feeding response and natural immunity to certain venoms, allowing them to prey on other reptiles in the wild. Captive-bred Mexican Black Kingsnakes are generally docile, hardy, and excellent for both beginner and experienced keepers.

Lifespan:

15–20 years in captivity with proper care.

Sexing:

Sexing is most accurately determined through probing by an experienced keeper or veterinarian.
• Females may grow slightly larger and heavier-bodied.
• Males tend to be slimmer with proportionally longer tails.

Enclosure:

• Juveniles: 20-gallon enclosure (30” x 12” x 12”) with secure hides.
• Adults: 36” x 18” x 18” enclosure or larger.

Provide hides on both the warm and cool sides, along with cork bark, branches, and enrichment items. These snakes are active and benefit from environmental complexity and opportunities to explore.

Substrate:

A moderately dry, easy-to-maintain substrate works well, such as:
• Aspen shavings
• Coconut fiber (kept on the drier side)
• Cypress mulch

These substrates allow for burrowing while maintaining a clean enclosure.

Lighting & Temperature:

• Basking Spot: 88–90°F
• Ambient Temperature: 78–82°F
• Cool Side: 72–75°F
• UVB Lighting: Not required, though low-level UVB (2.0–5.0) may provide enrichment. Provide a 10–12 hour light cycle.

Heating should be controlled with a thermostat to ensure stability.

Humidity:

Maintain 40–60% humidity. A humid hide can be provided during shedding cycles to assist with proper sheds.

Food:

Mexican Black Kingsnakes are carnivorous and excellent feeders.
• Juveniles typically eat appropriately sized pinky or fuzzy mice every 5–7 days.
• Adults usually eat mice or small rats every 7–10 days depending on size and metabolism.

Avoid overfeeding, as they are opportunistic eaters.

Water:

Provide a sturdy water bowl with fresh water available at all times. They may soak occasionally, especially during shedding.

Mexican Black Kingsnakes are one of the best pet snakes due to their hardiness, manageable size, and typically calm temperament. Their sleek, all-black appearance and strong feeding response make them especially appealing to both new and experienced keepers.
