Caring for your Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula

Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula

(Theraphosa blondi)

Basic Information:
The Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula is one of the largest arachnids on Earth, native to the dense tropical rainforests of northern South America, including Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. Known for its massive size, thick legs, and powerful appearance, this species can reach an astonishing 10–12 inches in leg span. Despite the name, they rarely eat birds—most of their diet consists of insects and small vertebrates. They are terrestrial burrowers and spend much of their time hidden under logs, leaves, or in deep burrows. This species is impressive but defensive, making it best suited for experienced keepers who enjoy a true display animal.

Lifespan:
Females: 15–20+ years
Males: 3–6 years

Sexing:

Sexing is best done by examining the shed exoskeleton for spermathecae to determine if the spider is female. Mature males develop tibial hooks and bulbous pedipalps, while females are larger and bulkier overall.

Enclosure:

  • Juveniles: 10-gallon enclosure (minimum 12” x 12” x 12”).

  • Adults: 20-gallon enclosure (30” x 12” x 12”) or larger.
Provide a horizontal setup with deep substrate for burrowing (6–8 inches), large cork bark hides, and a secure lid.

Substrate:

  • Use a moisture-friendly mix such as coconut fiber, peat moss, and topsoil, filled deep enough for burrowing. Keep substrate slightly packed to support tunnel stability. Avoid gravel, chips, or dry sand.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Day Temp: 70-75°F

  • No special lighting required

  • Maintain ambient temperature with heat mats or room temperature

  • Avoid direct sunlight

Humidity:

  • Maintain 75–85% humidity with regular misting. Good airflow is essential to prevent mold. A partially damp substrate works well, but avoid making the enclosure soggy.

Food:

  • This species is insectivorous, eating large gut-loaded feeders such as roaches, crickets, and the occasional superworm.

    • Juveniles: Feed 2–3 times weekly.

    • Adults: Feed every 7–10 days.
Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours, especially during molting periods.

Water:

  • Provide a shallow water dish with fresh water. No sponge is necessary—just keep it clean.

The Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula is a truly impressive species that offers one of the most dramatic visual presences of any tarantula. Its massive size, unique rainforest behaviors, and striking appearance make it a captivating showcase animal for experienced keepers who appreciate observing natural tarantula behaviors in a well-designed enclosure.
