Fancy Mice
Lifespan:
1.5-3 years in captivity with excellent care.
Sexing:
Males and females are distinguishable by the distance between the genital opening and anus (greater in males). Males may also have a stronger odor and are more prone to fighting if housed together.
Enclosure:
The enclosure should provide plenty of horizontal floor space, hiding huts, chew toys, tunnels, ropes, and exercise wheels (solid-surface wheels only, to prevent injury). Mice are excellent climbers, so multi-level enclosures with enrichment opportunities are ideal.
Minimum Size: 20-gallon long tank or equivalent wired cage with bar spacing of ¼ inch or less to prevent escape.
Substrate:
Use paper-based bedding, aspen shavings, or shredded cardboard. Avoid pine and cedar shavings, which release harmful aromatic oils. Spot-clean soiled bedding daily and perform a full bedding change weekly.
Lighting & Temperature:
Maintain a 12-hour light/dark cycle using natural room light or indirect lighting.
Ideal room temperature should remain between 65–75°F. Keep the enclosure away from drafts, direct sunlight, heaters, or air vents to prevent stress or illness.
Food:
Provide a balanced commercial mouse or rodent block diet as the nutritional base. Supplement with small amounts of fresh vegetables, whole grains, and occasional fruits. Seeds, nuts, and treats should be offered sparingly to avoid obesity. Fresh water should be available at all times in a sipper bottle or heavy ceramic dish.
Socialization:
Fancy mice are naturally curious and can become quite tame with gentle, consistent handling.
Begin by offering treats from your hand to build trust.
Handle mice with a gentle scoop rather than grabbing, as sudden movements may stress them.
