(Grammostola pulchripes)

Basic Information:
The Chaco Golden Knee Tarantula is a large, terrestrial tarantula native to the grasslands and scrub regions of South America, particularly in Paraguay and Argentina. This species is known for its dark body contrasted by striking golden bands on its legs, giving it the “golden knee” name. Adults can reach an impressive 7–8 inch leg span.

They are slow-growing but extremely hardy and are well known for their calm temperament. This species is primarily nocturnal but is often visible during the day, making it a great display tarantula. Due to their docile nature and forgiving care requirements, they are considered one of the best beginner tarantulas.

Lifespan:
Females: 15–20+ years
Males: 5-7 years

• Females are larger-bodied and live significantly longer

Enclosure:

• Juveniles: Small enclosure or critter keeper
• Adults: 10–20 gallon enclosure or similar-sized terrarium

A dry to slightly moist, burrow-friendly substrate is ideal, such as:
• Coconut fiber
• Organic topsoil
• Soil-based mixes

Provide several inches of substrate to allow for digging and burrowing behavior.

  • Adults: Feed every 7–10 days.

Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours, especially during molting periods.
