Arboreal and semi-cave-dwelling by nature, these snakes are active, intelligent, and fast-moving, making them a rewarding choice for experienced keepers.
Lifespan:
15–20 years in captivity
Sexing:
Males are generally smaller and thinner, while females are larger and heavier-bodied. Sexing is most accurately done by probing or experienced handling.
Enclosure:
Adults: Minimum adult size: 4x2x4 ft (tall enclosures preferred)
Include vertical climbing branches, ledges, and cork rounds
Secure locking doors—these snakes are escape artists
Provide multiple hides, especially elevated ones to mimic cave ledges
Substrate:
Aspen shavings, cypress mulch, or paper towels.
Avoid cedar or pine due to toxic oils.
Spot clean regularly and fully replace substrate monthly.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Spot: 85–88°F
Ambient Temperature: 75–82°F
Cool Side: 70–75°F
No special UVB required, but a low-level UVB bulb may provide additional benefits.
Use a thermostat-regulated heat mat or ceramic heat emitter if needed for nighttime temps
Humidity:
Maintain 60-70% humidity.
Increase slightly during shedding with light misting or a humid hide.
Food:
Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents (mice or rats depending on size).

Adults: every 10–14 days
Do not handle for at least 48 hours after feeding to prevent regurgitation.
