Caring for Brazilian Rainbow Boa

Brazilian Rainbow Boa

Epicrates cenchria

Basic Information:
The Brazilian Rainbow Boa is a beautifully colored, medium-sized snake native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil and surrounding regions of South America. This species is best known for its incredible iridescence, which creates a rainbow-like sheen across its scales under the right lighting. Adults typically reach 4–6 feet in length and have a moderately thick, muscular build. They are primarily nocturnal, spending much of their time hidden during the day and becoming more active at night. Captive-bred individuals are generally calm and handleable, though they require more precise humidity control than many other commonly kept snakes.

Lifespan:

20–25 years in captivity with proper care

Sexing:

Sexing is most accurately determined through probing or popping by an experienced keeper or veterinarian.

  • Females generally grow larger and heavier-bodied.

  • Males tend to stay slightly smaller and may have proportionally longer tails.

Enclosure:

  • Juveniles: 20 gallon enclosure (30” x 12” x 12”) with secure hides.

  • Adults: 4’ x 2’ x 2’ enclosure or larger (PVC enclosures are ideal for humidity retention

Provide secure hides on both the warm and cool sides, along with cork bark, branches, and dense décor to create a naturalistic environment. While primarily terrestrial, Brazilian Rainbow Boas will occasionally climb when given the opportunity.

Substrate:

A natural loose substrate that mimics their environment works well, such as:

  • Coconut fiber

  • Cypress Mulch

  • Organic topsoil Blend

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Spot: 85-88°F

  • Ambient Temperature: 78–82°F

  • Cool Side: 75-78°F

  • No special UVB required, but a low-level UVB bulb may provide additional benefits.

Heating should be regulated with a thermostat to ensure stable temperatures without drying out the enclosure.

Humidity:

  • Maintain 70-90% humidity.

  • Increase slightly during shedding with light misting or a humid hide.

Food:

Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents (mice or rats depending on size).

  • Juveniles: every 5–7 days|

  • Adults: every 10–14 days

Do not handle for at least 48 hours after feeding to prevent regurgitation.

Water:

Provide a small to medium water dish with fresh water at all times. These snakes occasionally soak, especially during shedding.

Brazilian Rainbow Boas are highly sought after for their stunning iridescence and manageable size. When their humidity needs are met, they are generally calm, hardy, and rewarding to keep. Their striking appearance and relatively moderate size make them an excellent choice for keepers looking to step beyond beginner species.
