Blue Death Feigning Beetle Care

Lifespan:
8–10 years with proper care

Sexing:

Males are usually smaller and slimmer than females, but sexing is generally difficult without dissection or magnification. For most keepers, keeping multiple individuals is the easiest way to establish pairs.

Enclosure:

  • A 5–10 gallon terrarium with secure ventilation is perfect for a small group.

  • Provide several hides, rocks, and cork bark to create a naturalistic environment.

  • Use a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape.

Substrate:
A mix of sand, coconut fiber, and soil (kept mostly dry) allows for burrowing.

Depth of 2–3 inches recommended.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Spot: 85–90°F (optional low-watt heat source if room temp is low)

  • Ambient Temperature: 75–85°F

  • Cool Side: Room temperature (low 70s is fine)

  • Lighting: Not required, but a natural day/night light cycle helps regulate activity.

Humidity:

Maintain low humidity (15–30%). These beetles are desert dwellers and do not tolerate moisture well. Good airflow is critical.

Food:

  • Offer a variety of dried and fresh foods such as:

  • Dry dog or cat kibble

  • Fresh vegetables (carrots, leafy greens, squash)

  • Occasional fruit (apple slices or banana)

  • Leaf litter and decomposed organic material

Water:

Offer gel water crystals or lightly mist a corner of the enclosure once a week.

Never use an open water dish—risk of drowning is high.

Blue Feigning Death Beetles are one of the most fascinating and low-maintenance invertebrates available in the pet trade. Their long lifespan, quirky behavior, and striking coloration make them a fun addition to any desert-themed enclosure or educational setup. They’re especially great for classrooms or as a beginner insect pet for responsible children.
