Caring for your Bearded Dragon

Basic Information:
The Central Bearded Dragon is one of the most popular reptile species in the pet trade. Native to the arid regions of Australia, they are known for their calm demeanor, distinct "beard" of spiny scales under their chin, and ease of care. Bearded dragons are active during the daytime, basking in the sun to regulate their body temperature. Adults typically reach 18-24 inches in length, with males being slightly larger than females. They are known for their interactive nature, often seeking human attention and handling.

Lifespan:
Can live between 10 to 15 years in captivity

Sexing:
Sexing can be done by examining the base of the tail for bulges (males) or a smooth, slender tail (females). Males may also have larger, more pronounced heads.

Enclosure:

  • Juveniles: A 40-gallon* terrarium (36” x 18” x 18”) with hides and climbing structures.

    • Please note: This is only a short term starter tank size. As your bearded dragon grows, the ability to provide the needed temperatures across it’s whole body, while maintaining a proper heat gradient, become impossible. It is advised to start with the appropriate size enclosure for an adult.

  • Adults: A 120-gallon terrarium (48” x 24” x 24”) or larger, with space for basking, hiding, and feeding areas. Providing vertical space for climbing is important.

Substrate:
A loose sand and soil mixture is ideal, as it mimics their natural desert environment.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Spot: 105-110°F.

  • Ambient Temperature: 85-90°F during the day.

  • Cool Side: 75-80°F.

  • UVB Lighting: Use a 10.0 UVB T5HO bulb to support calcium absorption and overall health, keeping the light on for 10-12 hours a day.

Humidity:
Bearded Dragons require low humidity, typically around 30-40%.

Food:
Bearded Dragons are omnivores. Their diet should include a mix of leafy greens, vegetables, and insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, and mealworms.

Water:
Provide fresh water daily in a shallow dish, and lightly mist the enclosure to maintain proper hydration. Bearded dragons may not drink directly from a water dish but will drink droplets from the surface or plants.

Supplementation:

  • Calcium without D3: Dust food 3-4 times weekly.

  • Calcium with D3: Use once a week if adequate UVB lighting is provided.

  • Multivitamins with D3: Offer once monthly in place of the Calcium with D3 to support overall health.
