Rose Hair Tarantula

(Grammostola rosea)

Basic Information:
The Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula is one of the most popular pet tarantulas in the hobby, native to the arid regions of Chile. Known for their calm demeanor and subtle coloration, they typically display brown to gray bodies with a slight pink or rose-colored sheen on their carapace. Adults usually reach a leg span of 4–5 inches.

They are terrestrial, slow-moving spiders that spend most of their time resting or waiting to ambush prey. Rose Hair Tarantulas are primarily nocturnal but may be visible during the day. While generally docile, they can flick urticating hairs when stressed and are best treated as display animals with minimal handling.

Lifespan:
• Females: 15–20+ years
• Males: 4–6 years

Sexing:
Sexing is typically determined by experienced keepers.
• Males are slimmer with longer legs and mature faster.
• Females are larger-bodied and live significantly longer.

Enclosure:

• Juveniles: Small enclosure or critter keeper.
• Adults: 5–10 gallon enclosure or similar-sized terrarium.

Provide a secure enclosure with a tight-fitting lid and good ventilation. Include a hide such as cork bark and keep the setup simple, as they do not require complex décor.

Substrate:

A dry, burrow-friendly substrate is ideal, such as:
• Coconut fiber
• Topsoil
• Soil-based mixes

Provide a few inches of substrate to allow for light burrowing.

Lighting & Temperature:

• Basking Spot: Not required
• Ambient Temperature: 68–78°F
• Cool Side: 65–70°F
• UVB Lighting: Not required. Provide a natural day/night cycle.

Avoid excessive heat, as they prefer stable, moderate temperatures.

Humidity:

Maintain low to moderate humidity (40–60%). Keep substrate mostly dry, with a slightly moister area if needed.

Food:

Rose Hair Tarantulas are carnivorous ambush predators.
• Feed appropriately sized insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms
• Juveniles should be fed more frequently
• Adults typically eat once every 1–2 weeks

They may go through long fasting periods, which is normal for this species.

Water:

Provide a shallow water dish with fresh water at all times. Ensure it is stable and cannot tip over.

Chilean Rose Hair Tarantulas are a classic beginner species due to their calm nature, simple care requirements, and long lifespan (especially females). Their slow movements and hardy nature make them an excellent introduction to tarantula keeping.
