Ocelot Gecko Care

Lifespan:

6–10 years in captivity with proper husbandry.

Sexing:

Males typically have visible hemipenal bulges at the base of the tail and pre-anal pores, while females lack both. Sexing is most reliable once they reach maturity.

Enclosure:

  • Juveniles: 10-gallon terrarium (20” x 10” x 12”).

  • Adults: 20-gallon long terrarium (30” x 12” x 12”) or larger.

Provide a horizontal enclosure with multiple hides, cork bark, and rocks to mimic their natural habitat.

Substrate:

Use a loose, natural substrate blend of coconut fiber, topsoil, and sand (approximately 50:40:10) to promote burrowing and humidity retention. Avoid reptile carpet due to hygiene and injury risks. Paper towels can be used temporarily for juveniles or quarantine setups.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Basking Spot: 90-95°F

  • Ambient Range: 80–85°F

  • Cool Side:  72–75°F

  • UVB: The use of a 5.0 UVB bulb is recommended for this species,

Humidity:

Maintain 50–70% humidity with light misting once or twice daily. Include a moist hide with sphagnum moss to aid in shedding.

Food:

Ocelot Geckos are insectivorous. Feed gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms, and occasional waxworms. Offer food 4–5 times per week for adults and daily for juveniles.

Water:

Provide a shallow water dish of clean, dechlorinated water at all times. Light misting also helps with hydration and humidity regulation.

Supplementation:

  • Calcium without D3: Dust food 3-4 times weekly.

  • Calcium with D3: Use once a week if adequate UVB lighting is provided.

  • Multivitamins with D3: Offer once monthly in place of the Calcium with D3 to support overall health.

Ocelot Geckos are beautifully patterned, low-maintenance lizards with engaging personalities. Their hardy nature, moderate size, and adaptability make them an excellent pet for hobbyists who appreciate an active yet easygoing species.
