Caring for your Nigerian Uromastyx
Nigerian Uromastyx
(Uromastyx geyri)
Basic Information:
The Nigerian Uromastyx, also known as the Saharan or Geyr’s Spiny-Tailed Lizard, is a hardy, desert-dwelling species found in arid regions of Niger, Mali, and Algeria. These diurnal reptiles are known for their striking orange, yellow, or red coloration and docile temperaments once acclimated. Adults reach 12–16 inches in length and thrive in hot, dry environments. They are herbivorous and spend much of their time basking or digging burrows to escape the heat.
Lifespan:
15-20 years in captivity with proper husbandry.
Sexing:
Males typically exhibit brighter coloration and broader heads, while females are generally duller and slightly smaller. Visual sexing becomes easier after 8–12 months of age.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 40-gallon terrarium.
Adults: 4’ x 2’ x 2’ for one Adult.
Substrate:
A mixture of sand and soil is ideal for creating a naturalistic desert environment. Loose substrate helps with burrowing and mimics their natural habitat. Ensure the substrate is dry to maintain appropriate humidity levels.
Lighting & Temperature:
Basking Spot: 100-110°F.
Ambient Temperature: 85-90°F during the day.
Cool Side: 75-80°F.
UVB Lighting: Use 10.0 UVB lighting for 10-12 hours daily to promote proper calcium absorption and overall health.
Humidity:
Geyr’s Spiny-Tailed Lizard thrives in low humidity. Maintain humidity between 20-30%. Provide regular opportunities for basking, which will help in their shedding process.
Food:
Geyr’s Spiny-Tailed Lizard is herbivorous, primarily consuming a diet of leafy greens, grasses, and vegetables such as dandelion greens, mustard greens, and collard greens. Occasionally, they may also consume some flowers.
Water:
Provide fresh water daily in a shallow dish. It's important to also mist the enclosure lightly to maintain the proper humidity levels without over-saturating the substrate.
Supplementation:
Calcium without D3: Dust food 3-4 times weekly.
Calcium with D3: Use once a week if adequate UVB lighting is provided.
Multivitamins with D3: Offer once monthly in place of the Calcium with D3 to support overall health.
The Nigerian Uromastyx is a vibrant, low-maintenance desert lizard perfect for those seeking an active yet calm display animal. Their gentle demeanor and striking colors make them a rewarding addition to any reptile collection.
