Caring for your Mexican Flame Knee Tarantula
Mexican Flame Knee Tarantula
(Brachypelma auratum)
Basic Information:
The Mexican Flame Knee Tarantula is a beautiful and calm terrestrial species native to the dry scrublands and semi-desert regions of western Mexico. Named for the striking orange-red "flame" markings on its knees, this species is a close relative of the popular Mexican Red Knee. Adults typically reach 5–6 inches in leg span and are known for their docile temperament, making them one of the best display tarantulas for beginners and collectors alike.
Lifespan:
Females: 20-25 years
Males: 5-10 years
Sexing:
Sexing is best determined after a molt by examining the exuviae (shed exoskeleton) for spermathecae in females. Mature males often appear leggier with smaller abdomens and develop tibial hooks used during mating.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 10-gallon terrarium (12” x 12” x 12”).
Adults: 15–20-gallon terrarium (24” x 12” x 12”) or equivalent.
A horizontal setup is ideal since they are ground-dwellers. Include a hide, a shallow water dish, and plenty of substrate for burrowing.
Substrate:
A loose substrate mix of coco fiber, topsoil, and sand (3–4 inches deep) helps maintain proper humidity while allowing digging. Avoid reptile carpet or wood chips, as these can trap moisture or cause injury.
Lighting & Temperature:
Day Temp: 75–85°F
No special lighting required
Maintain ambient temperature with heat mats or room temperature
Avoid direct sunlight
Humidity:
Maintain 60-70% humidity, with light, occasional misting on one side of the enclosure. Good ventilation is essential to prevent mold.
Food:
The Mexican Flame Knee Tarantula is insectivorous. Offer gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, or mealworms weekly. Adults can be fed every 7–10 days, while juveniles may eat twice weekly. Remove uneaten food after 24 hours to avoid stress during molts.
Water:
Provide a shallow water dish with fresh water. No sponge is necessary—just keep it clean.
The Mexican Flame Knee Tarantula is a hardy, slow-moving, and visually stunning species that thrives in captivity. Its calm nature, long lifespan, and ease of care make it an excellent choice for beginners or anyone seeking a beautiful display tarantula.
