Caring for your Guatemalan Tiger Rump Tarantula
Guatemalan Tiger Rump Tarantula
(Cyclosternum fasciatum)
Basic Information:
The Guatemalan Tiger Rump Tarantula is a small to medium-sized New World species native to Guatemala and surrounding regions of Central America. Known for its striking orange and black “tiger stripe” abdominal pattern, this species is fast, alert, and visually impressive. Adults typically reach 3–4 inches in leg span and are primarily nocturnal, spending much of the day hidden in burrows or silk-lined retreats. Despite their speed, they are generally hardy and well-suited to intermediate keepers.
Lifespan:
Females: 10-12 years
Males: 3-4 years
Sexing:
Sexing is best determined after a molt by examining the exuviae (shed exoskeleton) for spermathecae in females. Mature males often appear leggier with smaller abdomens and develop tibial hooks used during mating.
Enclosure:
Juveniles: 5–10 gallon equivalent (or 8” x 8” x 8”).
Adults: 10–15 gallon equivalent (or 12” x 12” x 12”).
Provide more floor space than height to avoid fall injuries.
Substrate:
Use 3–4 inches of moisture-retentive substrate such as coconut fiber, peat moss, or a soil blend. This species benefits from a slightly damp lower layer with a dry surface. Include a hide and light cork décor.
Lighting & Temperature:
Day Temp: 72–78°F
No special lighting required
Maintain ambient temperature with heat mats or room temperature
Avoid direct sunlight
Humidity:
Maintain 60-70% humidity, with light, occasional misting on one side of the enclosure. Good ventilation is essential to prevent mold.
Food:
The Mexican Flame Knee Tarantula is insectivorous. Offer gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, or mealworms weekly. Adults can be fed every 7–10 days, while juveniles may eat twice weekly. Remove uneaten food after 24 hours to avoid stress during molts.
Water:
Provide a shallow water dish with fresh water. No sponge is necessary—just keep it clean.
Colorful, hardy, and active, the Guatemalan Tiger Rump Tarantula is an excellent display species for keepers who enjoy watching natural behaviors such as webbing, burrowing, and nighttime exploration. Their vibrant markings and manageable care requirements make them a rewarding addition to any tarantula collection.
