Caring for your Green Bottle Blue Tarantula

Green Bottle Blue Tarantula

(Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens)

Basic Information:

The Green Bottle Blue Tarantula is one of the most visually striking spiders in the pet trade. Native to the arid desert regions of northern Venezuela, this terrestrial species is famous for its electric blue legs, metallic green carapace, and vibrant orange abdomen. It builds intricate webs across its enclosure, often creating elaborate tunnels and silk “carpets.” While not particularly fond of handling due to their speed and skittish nature, they are fascinating display animals with a bold appetite and energetic behavior. Adults typically reach a leg span of 5–6 inches.

Lifespan:
Females: 12-15 years
Males: 3–5 years

Sexing:

Mature males are leggier with longer legs, bulbous pedipalps, and tibial hooks.

Females are stockier and lack tibial hooks.

A shed exoskeleton can be examined to determine sex.

Enclosure:

  • Minimum Size: A 5–10 gallon horizontal terrarium works well, with a secure ventilated lid.

  • Use 3–4 inches of dry, compactable substrate and include anchor points like cork bark for webbing.

  • Provide a hide, though they often choose to web over the entire enclosure.

Substrate:

  • Use dry coco fiber, sand, or soil mix—keep it bone dry with good airflow.

  • They thrive in arid conditions and are prone to stress in overly humid environments.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Day Temp: 75–85°F

  • No special lighting required

  • Maintain ambient temperature with heat mats or room temperature

  • Avoid direct sunlight

Humidity:

  • Moderate humidity of 50–60%. Do Not Mist

  • Provide a shallow water dish to aid humidity

Food:

  • Insectivorous: crickets, roaches, small mealworms

  • Feed juveniles every 3–4 days, adults once a week

  • Remove uneaten prey to prevent stress

Water:

Provide a shallow water dish with fresh water. No sponge is necessary—just keep it clean.

With its dazzling colors and energetic nature, the Green Bottle Blue Tarantula is a showstopper that adds drama and movement to any collection. Though best appreciated as a display animal, its hardiness and vivid personality make it a favorite among hobbyists and a fantastic conversation piece.

Green Bottle Blue Tarantulas make exceptional pets thanks to their stunning coloration, active web-building behavior, and hardy nature. Their vibrant blue legs, orange abdomen, and metallic green carapace make them one of the most visually striking tarantulas in the hobby. Combined with their relatively simple care requirements and tendency to remain visible in their enclosures, they provide a rewarding experience for both new and experienced keepers.
