Dwarf Rabbit

Dwarf Rabbit

(SPE)

Dwarf rabbits are a group of small domestic rabbit breeds known for their compact size, upright ears, and expressive personalities. Popular varieties include the Netherland Dwarf, Dwarf Hotot, and Polish rabbit. Originating from Europe, these rabbits have been bred for their small stature and endearing appearance. Adults typically weigh between 1.5 to 3.5 pounds, making them ideal for indoor homes or smaller enclosures. Despite their size, they are energetic and require ample space, mental stimulation, and social interaction to thrive.

Lifespan:

8-12 years in captivity with excellent care.

Sexing:

Dwarf rabbits are not sexually dimorphic and require a physical exam to determine sex. A veterinarian or experienced breeder can confirm by examining the genital area. Spaying/neutering is highly recommended to reduce hormonal behaviors and prevent health issues.

Enclosure:

  • Minimum Size: 30” x 36” x  18” cage

  • The enclosure should have a solid bottom (no wire floors) and provide space for hiding huts, a litter box, and free movement. Include chew toys, cardboard tunnels, ramps, and safe climbing areas. Rabbits benefit from daily time outside their cage in a bunny-proofed area.

Substrate:

Use absorbent paper-based bedding or recycled newspaper pellets in the litter box. The rest of the enclosure can be lined with fleece, mats, or bare floor depending on your rabbit’s litter habits. Clean the litter box daily and sanitize the entire enclosure weekly.

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Maintain a consistent 12-hour light/dark cycle using natural daylight or full-spectrum avian lighting.

  • Keep room temperature between 65–75°F. Avoid drafts, direct air vents, and sudden temperature changes.

Food:

Feed unlimited fresh grass hay (e.g., timothy, orchard) as the dietary staple. Offer a daily measured amount of high-quality rabbit pellets, along with leafy greens like romaine, parsley, or dandelion. Avoid iceberg lettuce, sugary fruits, and starchy vegetables. Provide clean, fresh water in a heavy bowl or sipper bottle.

Socialization:

Dwarf rabbits are intelligent and often enjoy human companionship when socialized early and gently. They can be shy at first but grow affectionate with consistent interaction.

Avoid picking them up frequently; instead, sit on the floor and allow them to approach.

Encourage bonding with treats, grooming, and supervised free-roam time.

Playful and full of personality, dwarf rabbits make charming companions for gentle, attentive owners. With proper care, they can form deep bonds with their humans and live long, happy lives as cherished members of the household.
