Chinchilla Care
Chinchilla
(Chinchilla lanigera)
Chinchillas are small, nocturnal rodents native to the cool, rocky slopes of the Andes Mountains in South America. They are known for their incredibly dense fur — the softest of any land mammal — which protects them from cold temperatures and predators. Adult chinchillas typically weigh between 1–1.5 pounds and measure around 10–14 inches long (plus a 5–6 inch tail). They are highly active, agile jumpers, and enjoy exploring, climbing, and chewing.
Lifespan:
10–15 years in captivity, though some may live up to 20 with proper care.
Sexing:
Males have a visible gap between the anus and penis, while females’ openings are close together. Sexing is easiest once they reach maturity.
Enclosure:
Minimum Size: 30” x 18” x 48” multi-level cage with solid flooring.
Provide multiple shelves, ramps, and hide boxes for climbing and resting.
Ensure the cage has secure wire sides for ventilation but no wire floors, which can cause foot injuries.
Bedding/Liners:
Use paper-based bedding or kiln-dried aspen shavings. Avoid cedar or pine as their oils can cause respiratory issues. Spot clean daily and replace bedding weekly.
Lighting & Temperature:
Ambient Temperature: Keep between 60-70°F consistently.
Maintain a room temperature of 60–70°F.
Chinchillas do not tolerate heat or humidity; temperatures above 75°F can lead to heat stroke.
Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or drafts.
No special lighting or UVB is required, but a consistent day/night light cycle supports healthy behavior.
Food:
Chinchillas are herbivores. Feed a diet of:
High-quality chinchilla pellets as the staple.
Unlimited access to fresh timothy hay for digestion and dental health.
Offer small amounts of dried herbs, rose hips, or safe chew sticks as treats (avoid sugary fruits).
Socialization:
Chinchillas are intelligent and social, though they may take time to warm up to handling. Handle gently and support their body to avoid injury. Provide at least one hour of playtime daily in a chinchilla-safe space. They also require a dust bath 2–3 times a week using fine chinchilla dust — this helps absorb oils and keep their fur clean and soft.
Chinchillas are clean, quiet, and entertaining companions with playful personalities. Their low odor, minimal shedding, and long lifespan make them ideal for experienced small mammal owners seeking a unique and rewarding pet.
