The Asian Forest Scorpion is a large, impressive species native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It is known for its glossy black exoskeleton and large, powerful pincers. Generally docile but can be defensive if provoked, this scorpion is popular among enthusiasts for its striking appearance and manageable temperament.

5 to 8 years in captivity

Size:

Up to 8 inches (20 cm) in length

Temperament:

Mostly calm and slow-moving but will defend itself with a strong pinch if threatened.

Enclosure:

  • Minimum 10-gallon terrarium with secure lid

  • Provide a deep substrate (4–6 inches) of coconut fiber or peat moss for burrowing

  • Include hiding spots like cork bark, bark pieces, or half logs

  • Maintain good ventilation to prevent mold growth

Substrate:
Moist coconut fiber, peat moss, or soil mix
Keep substrate slightly damp but not wet to simulate rainforest floor conditions

Lighting & Temperature:

  • Ambient Temp: 75–85°F

  • No special UV lighting required

  • Use heat mats or room temperature to maintain warmth

Humidity:

  • High humidity around 75–85%

    Mist enclosure lightly every 2–3 days

    Provide a shallow water dish for drinking and humidity

Food:

  • Carnivorous: feeds on crickets, roaches, mealworms, and other insects

    Adults fed once or twice a week; juveniles more frequently

    Remove uneaten prey promptly

Handling:

  • Not recommended for frequent handling due to powerful pincers and defensive nature

  • Use tools or gloves when necessary

Asian Forest Scorpions fluoresce bright blue-green under UV light, making for a stunning display during nighttime observations.
